About Lockwood

Lockwood's History

Lockwood Group Limited was founded in 1951 by two Dutch immigrants, Johannes La Grouw Snr and Johannes Van Loghem with the idea of utilising New Zealand Radiata Pine in an innovative and distinctive engineered building system.

The first Lockwood homes were constructed in 1954 and the very first house sold was built as a fishing bach for Doctor Morrow of Auckland on the Waiteti Stream, Ngongotaha, Rotorua. This house still stands on its original site.

To date, more than 50,000 Lockwood homes and buildings have been constructed around the world. The components for these homes and buildings are manufactured in our production facility in Rotorua, New Zealand to an exacting standard by our team of skilled craftsmen.

Consistent standards, reliability, our historic performance and a deep sense of pride in this family owned business are integral components to creating a safe and secure home, ensuring a quality living experience for those who choose a natural solid timber alternative from Lockwood.

Lockwood has now operated in New Zealand and internationally for nearly 70 years and has become an iconic Kiwi brand, with a very distinctive style. With its patented x-profile construction and solid wood insulated materials, coupled with its low-maintenance qualities, a Lockwood home is an eco-smart choice.

Whether it’s a new home or a new commercial building, it’s always vitally important to choose a trustworthy and reputable partner. That’s why so many clients in our area choose Lockwood and Coastwood Homes to create their dream home.

Our Building System

External Insulated Board

The Lockwood 107mm external insulated wall system has been rated with an R-Value of 2.1, much higher than the building code requires for solid timber buildings. This rating is achieved with the use of a rigid foam insulation sandwiched between solid timber.

With minimal connection between the internal and external elements, there is much less heat loss in the building envelope ensuring your new Lockwood home is comfortable all year round.

Patented X-Profile

In the unique Lockwood building system, solid timber planks are locked – rather than nailed – together, using the patented aluminium x-profile. This creates a strong, versatile structure.

Vertical Tie Rod

Timber planks are machined and pre-drilled to take electrical services including allowances for incorporating the Lockwood vertical tie rod. The tie rod provides lateral bracing and the strength to withstand extreme weather conditions and earthquakes.

Integrated Joinery

In the Lockwood construction system, custom made joinery is integrated into the structure system for extra strength and to ensure a leak free living environment.

Passive Ventilation

Passive air flows over the top of the integrated joinery frames, allowing the building to breathe and feel fresh. This ensures a drier, healthier environment.

Low Maintenance, High Durability

The Lockwood advanced extruded aluminium sheathing is coated with a coloured polyester resin which provides a superior, longer lasting finish. Mechanically pressed onto the precisely engineered profile of exterior boards, the aluminium cladding looks good for years. This means our buildings don’t need frequent painting.

Corner Profile

This jointing method for Lockwood exterior walls provides a robust solution and greater H1 insulation properties with its tight connection. The extruded aluminium cladding extends over the exposed corner profile of the opposite wall, which assists to keep moisture out.
